Local administrators called to promote healthcare in Cameroon
Mayors in session at jeicom2021 |
The local administrators who were made up
of mayors drawn from different councils across the 360 council areas in
Cameroon were enjoined by the representative of the World Health Organization,
WHO-Cameroon office, Dr. Phanuel Habimana to continue to promote healthcare in
Cameroon because their engagement and support will take Cameroon far. The
seminar took place at the Multipurpose Sporting Complex, Saturday the 4th
of December 2021 on the sidelines of the Councils International Economic Forum
with the French acronym JEICOM21, organized in Yaounde by the United Councils
and Cities of Cameroon, UCCC.
While speaking at the end of the seminar,
Prof. Eugene Sobngwi, representative of the Minister of Public Health in
Cameroon noted the forum just created another opportunity for emphasis to be
laid on the role mayors and members of parliament play in the fight against
diseases like malaria and covid-19.
“The role of mayors in the promotion of healthy and balanced diet for the prevention of Non-Communicable Diseases, NCDs is primordial,”he said.
“Mayors are the backbone of our community health programs and any health strategy that aims to address the real needs of the population. It is only through those communities that we can tackle the problem of malaria which is one of the disasters that we have in our community,” Prof. Eugene continued.
WHO-Cameroon’s Representative, Dr. Habimana
first acknowledges the work the local elected officials are doing and like
Oliver Twist, he asked them to do more.
“We acknowledge and encourage the role of mayors, MPs and other administration in protecting the health of the population. We have just used the example of malaria, nutrition, and the covid-19 but this concerns all other health interventions which need the leadership and strong engagement of the local administration,” Dr. Habimana.
Note be taken, the seminar was organized by
Impact Sante Afrique, ISA in collaboration WHO-Cameroon, the Ministry of Public
Health and UCCC.
ISA had her stand at the JEICOM21 pioneer event and drilled visitors on their drive to promote healthcare awareness campaigns and to woo more decision makers to join the fight against malaria, COVID-19 and to promote community health.
One of the remarkable visitors to their stand was the Minister of Decentralization and Local Development, George Elanga Obam. To the minister,
“I am truly impressed by the work you are doing for our communities… be rest assured of government’s support in ameliorating the health systems for the population,” Minister George Elanga Obam.
The Executive Director of ISA, Olivia NGOU says
their active participation at JEICOM21 was because it is important for councils
and city councils to be more engaged in the health of their population.
“We think that if great actions are taken for communities like sensitization of the population for disease prevention, hygiene and sanitation, we will have better impact in the Health of all,” Olivia Ngou
